Made with simple pantry ingredients like flour, butter, and baking powder, fried dumplings come together easily and fry up beautifully when cooked low and slow. Their golden exterior and pillowy texture make them irresistible fresh out of the pan.

Whether paired with ackee and saltfish, stewed meats, or enjoyed on their own, these fried dumplings bring authentic Caribbean flavor to any meal.

Recipe Details:

  • Servings: 4–6

  • Prep Time: 10 mins

  • Cook Time: 12 mins

Ingredients:

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour (reserve ½ cup for dusting)

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 tablespoon cold unsalted butter

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1 cup ice-cold water

  • Oil, for frying

Instructions:

Prepare the Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, sift together 2 cups of flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

  • Add the cold butter and rub it into the flour using your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add the ice-cold water while mixing until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. Avoid overmixing.

  • Cover the dough with a damp paper towel and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.

Shape the Dumplings:

  • Lightly dust a clean surface with the reserved flour.

  • Divide the dough into small portions.

  • Roll into smooth balls or flatten slightly, depending on your preference.

Heat the Oil:

  • Preheat a deep fryer to 250°F or heat oil over low heat on the stovetop.

  • Ensure there is enough oil to fully submerge the dumplings.

Fry the Dumplings:

  • Carefully place the dumplings into the hot oil without overcrowding.

  • Fry on low heat for 8–10 minutes.

  • Increase the heat slightly for an additional 2–3 minutes until the dumplings are golden brown and fully cooked.

  • Flip occasionally for even browning.

Drain and Serve:

  • Remove dumplings using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  • Serve warm as a side dish or snack.

💡 Chef’s Note:

Frying the dumplings on low heat first ensures they cook through evenly before browning. For extra flavor, serve with ackee and saltfish, stewed meats, or enjoy them fresh with butter.
